Reading LJ writers recommended

August 15th, 2007 (07:25 pm)

I realized I have never fessed up that I have been reading my friends list in more ways than one. That's right, I've actually been reading their books. A diverse lot, to be sure, with varied voices and each interesting in their own way.

You'll remember, of course, how much I enjoyed [info]carriejones TIPS and [info]coebooth TYRELL. But now, I've explored even further and enjoyed myself tremendously. [info]aimee_ferris GIRL OVERBOARD, [info]katibgirl IN THE NAME OF GOD, [info]micolz EMILY GOLDBERG LEARNS TO SALSA, [info]lgburns TALKING TRASH, [info]kathyerskine QUAKING, [info]mph33 LEMONADE MOUTH. Lots of interesting reads here. Oh, and [info]cynthialord RULES for those of you who don't read a book until everyone else has already read it.

So now you understand why I have nothing to read on the airplane.

And on a writers high note--if you haven't been on Verla's today, hustle on over to hear about that rarest of gems--a first time writer taken from the slush and given a two-book deal. Danette, who is not only a very nice person but a native New Yorker to boot, accomplished her dream without spending tons of money on conferences or even connecting with an agent. It was pure dedication and perserverence. What a story! See you guys--Nonfiction RULES!

Wow, Linda, are all these fabulous writers on your f-list? I've read many of the ones you mentioned but I have to say, a book I am especially looking forward to is IN THE NAME OF GOD. Just waiting for the right moment to pounce on it.

And Danette! Isn't she amazing!

Well, er, yeah, I push a button and I friend them. Doesn't mean they know me, like me, or want to be my friend. But apparently I can sniff out good writers! And I'm sure that includes those with manuscripts waiting to become books.

Paula,

Sorry it took so long to respond--I just got back from vacation.

More than enjoying it, I really appreciated the story and they way you were able to present it. I think the positive side of Arab culture and society is so rarely understood in America. The complexities of the book made it slow, thoughtful going for me (in a good way). It is the kind of book I'd love to see my daughter reading and discussing in school (she starts h.s. next week). I'm less certain about recommending it for reading on her own because there are so many parts where I think a reader should question and follow the ideas presented with discussion. Maybe these are just issues and ideas that lend themselves to being part of a larger, thoughtful conversation. I think you have a really interesting point of view because of your life experience and you shared that in a powerful way through your book. I'm eager to read the next one.

I didn't realize that you lived in Brooklyn for a while. I'm a Brooklyn girl myself! We might try to go to the parade too, although we say that every year and haven't made it yet. It looks like we are lucking out with an extended week of beautiful weather, so enjoy it.
